Top Female Docs 2010
A list of medicine’s finest women

Over the years, we’ve asked SJ docs to vote for the peers they think are worthy of recognition. We’ve tallied the votes and listed for you year after year – the docs at the top of their game. For this special women’s issue, we reviewed lists from years past and compiled a new list of Top Docs – specifically showcasing the women docs who have garnered the most votes. Congratulations to these women who have earned the respect of fellow SJ physicians.

GERIATRIC MEDICINE BARBARA ROEHL, MD, FAMILY MEDICINE CENTER, WOODBURY

In late June, Robin Licker, MD and Abhi Govind, MD presented a Health and Wellness in-service to 80 teachers at Gateway High School.

Drs. Oladotun Akinmurele, Amutha Sornaraj, and Azezeh Salloum represented our hospital and residency program at the annual "Health Day" at the Woodbury Farmers' Market on July 23.  They did a great job handing our patient education materials and answering questions.

On July 11, thousands of bicycle riders gathered at the Ben Franklin Bridge in Philadelphia to cycle 68 miles to Buena, NJ.  Seventy-eight of those riders represented Underwood-Memorial Hospital and raised close to $14,000 for the American Cancer Society.  Dr. Greg Herman and his wife, Meg, rally troops every year at Underwood for this worthwhile event.

Dr. Ravishankar Ramaswamy (Class of 2010) was recently honored with the “Winter Griffith Scholarship Award” for Excellence in Practice Improvement and Patient-centered Care. This award recognizes excellence in practice improvement involving patient-centered care by an outstanding family medicine resident. The award honors H. Winter Griffith, MD, author of over twenty-seven books, including his first book, Instructions for Patients. Dr. Griffith was a strong advocate for patient engagement through patient education. This award recognizes outstanding patient interaction, education, care and outcome by a resident in the family medicine medical home setting.

Dr. Ramaswamy must have demonstrated evidence that his work is patient-centered through active involvement of patients in the practice improvement activity as well as documentation of changes in patient knowledge, attitude skill, motivation, environment or health outcome. Examples of patient-centered practice improvement activities include patient surveys, focus groups, motivational interviewing, self-management support, shared goal setting, health coaching, innovative use of media or communication technology, patient portals, e-visits, or behavior change activities.  The work can be either original research or a review of the literature.

Ravi will receive a $1,000 scholarship, an award certificate, and complimentary registration to the Conference on Practice Improvement in December, 2010 in San Antonio, Texas. Ravi will also be invited to present his work as a distinguished poster at the conference.
