Family Medicine Center, Woodbury

The “Home Base” for the Residency Program is the “Family Medicine Center” Located on the campus of Underwood Memorial Hospital

At the Family Medicine Center residents are provided the opportunity to acquire skills needed for family-centered care, and continuity of care via their patient panels. A full spectrum of care is encountered in the Center reflecting all aspects of medicine. Acute and chronic care is provided for newborns, adolescents, and adults, as well as preventative care. Geriatric Assessments are performed by a fellowship trained faculty member and a resident thus assuring quality care for the elderly population. Second and third year residents also provide care to geriatric patients at a local skilled care facility and via home visits with faculty.

The amount of time residents spend in the office increases with each year of training. First-year residents are scheduled for two-half days a week. Second-year residents are scheduled for two to three half days per week. Third-year residents are scheduled for three to five half days per week. First–year residents typically see three to seven patients per day; second–year residents, seven to ten; and third–year residents, eight to ten.

Visits that are scheduled with a resident require additional time because an attending physician must supervise the resident's treatment plans. The Family Medicine Center typically offers more services than a non-teaching office so resident physicians can fulfill requirements for board certification upon graduation. Residents and nurses form patient care teams during office sessions that ensure continuity and provide a sense of teamwork.

Multiple personal computers and wireless laptops are available throughout the center. Patient information is readily available through Cerner Power Chart with access to the Hospital’s lab, radiology and pertinent medical records. Access to InfoPoem and Update are provided via internet to all residents. All electronic records are accessible 24/7, ensuring continuity.

Most teaching of office medicine occurs in our preceptor room in which the residents complete their charts and discuss cases with the preceptors.
