Academic Update

Dr. Devna Singh a recent graduate contributed a chapter to the publication of the “Fundamentals of Complementary and Integrative Medicine”.

Dr. Jaymica Patel is our newly appointed Chief Resident for the 2007-2008 academic year and we congratulate her!

Dr. Sylvester Sutton Hamilton published “Screening for developmental delay: Reliable, easy-to-use tools” in the May 2006 issue of The Journal of Family Practice.   This was an evidence-based review of the literature on developmental screening.

Dr. Sylvester Sutton Hamilton has an article scheduled for publication in December 2006 in the American Family Physician.  The article concerns the evaluation of children with reading difficulties.

Dr. Sylvester Sutton Hamilton and John Armando LCSW are currently writing a review article for the American Family Physician concerning Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Dr. Gina Glass’ Osteoarthritis article was republished in the “Disease-a-Month” Journal, September 2006.  Dr. Glass was recently appointed to Clinical Assistant Professor at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.

Dr. Gregory Herman presented at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine in San Francisco on “No Scalpel Vasectomy”.

Dr. Suzanne VanDerwerken is a reviewer for the American Board of Family Medicine recertification examinations.

The entire faculty and residents will present the “Tar Wars” program at the Pleasant Valley School in Harrison Township on June 8, 2007. The mission of Tar Wars is to educate students about being tobacco-free, provide them with the tools to make positive decisions regarding their health, and promote personal responsibility for their well being.

Dr. Barbara Roehl, a graduate of our residency program and now a faculty member has published an article on Medication Prescribing for the Elderly in the Annals of Long-Term Care: Clinical Care and Aging 2006 (14)6. Dr. Roehl has also:

  1. published an abstract on the Effect of Social Capital on Exercise in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society 2006; 54(4) Supplement S1-S230: S109.
  2. presented on the topic of Medication Prescribing in Older Adults at the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA (May, 2006) and at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA (April, 2006).
  3. presented on the Impact of Restorative Nursing on Social and Physical Functioning: a Pilot Nursing Home Study at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine Annual Meeting in San Francisco, CA (April, 2006).
  4. presented on The Effect of Social Capital on Exercise in the Elderly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians Spring Conference in Philadelphia, PA (April, 2006).

We are also thrilled to have Karey Breen, MD join our program as a transfer from the Grand Forks Family Medicine Residency in Grand Forks, North Dakota.  We welcome her!

New FMC Update

With excitement and anticipation, the residency program and family medicine center officially moved into its new office building on September 25th 2006.  This brand new building, in addition to additional exam rooms, will allow full wireless access, audio-visual monitoring, and an advanced residency education classroom.
