medicine residency program
We warmly welcome you to our website where you will find detailed information about the Family Medicine Residency Program at Underwood Memorial Hospital. Browse our site and get to know our “family” of residents, faculty, staff, the hospital, and our Family Medicine Center.
Founded in 1982 to help address the community’s future need for skilled healthcare professionals, Underwood-Memorial Hospital developed the Family Medicine Residency Program. The Program is one of the oldest family medicine residencies in the Delaware Valley, and has always had the benefit of strong support from the hospital and its medical staff. Our affiliation with Thomas Jefferson University has added new dimensions to an already outstanding program. The Residency Program serves a culturally, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse patient population using a biopsychosocial model of medicine. Practice opportunities are plentiful and span the entire range of family medicine. The program maintains the flexibility necessary for residents to pursue special interests and to pursue career goals.
The program environment is supportive while maximizing independent practice. The residents benefit from direct and collegial access to sub-specialists.
Some of the Program highlights are:
- High faculty to resident ratio
- Successful graduates who are practicing in many diverse settings
- Unopposed program in a community based hospital
- Experienced and dedicated full and part time faculty
- A behavioral science curriculum that focuses on pragmatic psychosocial concerns, development of the doctor-patient alliance, and optimizing health related behaviors
- Protected time for core didactic conferences
- Sports medicine program which includes care of high school athletes and experience as their "team doc"
- Computerized resident scheduling, and procedure documentation (New Innovations)
- Annual residency retreat
- Night float call system (refer to Curriculum page for details)
- 24/7 access to library resources, and "Up-to-Date" and InfoPoem subscriptions
- Generous CME allowance
