family medicine residency program

Helping address the community’s future need for skilled health professionals, Underwood-Memorial Hospital developed educational and training opportunities in family medicine, general surgery, gastroenterology, nursing, pharmacy and other allied health disciplines. Our Family Practice Center, in Woodbury, houses the Family Medicine Residency program, a stellar initiative in which physicians train in a fully accredited three-year residency program. Many of tomorrow’s family health professionals find their beginning here in a rich and fertile learning environment.

Underwood-Memorial is one of the oldest family medicine residencies in the Delaware Valley. Founded in 1982, the program has always enjoyed the strong support of the hospital and its medical staff. Our affiliation with Thomas Jefferson University has added new dimensions to an already outstanding program.

The Family Medicine Residency Program serves a growing patient population using a biopsychosocial model of medicine. Residents practice intergenerational family care with a multicultural and socio-economic diverse patient population. Practice opportunities span the entire range of family medicine and the program maintains the flexibility necessary for residents to pursue special interests and to pursue career goals.

The program environment is supportive while maximizing independent practice, and the residents enjoy direct and collegial access to sub-specialists. A behavioral science curriculum focuses on pragmatic psychosocial concerns, development of the doctor-patient alliance, and optimizing health related behaviors.

Conveniently located in Woodbury, Gloucester County, in Southwestern New Jersey, we are near the Delaware River, 10 miles from Thomas Jefferson University and downtown Philadelphia; 26 miles from Wilmington, Delaware, 45 miles from Trenton, New Jersey, 90 minutes from New York City and only a short ride from the Jersey Shore resorts and the Pinelands State Parks. Woodbury is a historic, diversely populated community that provides a downtown area with shops and restaurants.
