DISCOVER top-quality heart care.
Our Heart Center is the only hospital-based, cardiac diagnostic and rehabilitation facility in Gloucester County. And our newly renovated, state-of-the-art cath lab contains brand-new technology.
Our cardiac team has achieved performance scores consistent with the top 10% of U.S. hospitals according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Hospital Compare website.
For heart attack patients, our Emergency Department is southern New Jersey’s premier destination for cardiac intervention. Underwood is the only hospital in Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland counties that provides the emergency percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) procedure.
For this heart cath procedure, a balloon-tipped catheter is inserted into an artery and threaded toward a trouble spot near the heart. The balloon is inflated to widen the narrowed artery and restore blood flow. In many cases, an expandable metal mesh tube, called a stent, is inserted to keep the artery open. PCI is an extremely effective way to stop a heart attack as quickly as possible, which helps save heart muscle and aids in a more speedy recovery.
And our cardiac team has a Door-to-Balloon time for this emergency cardiac care of just 59 minutes, while the national benchmark is 90 minutes. Every minute counts during a heart attack because time means muscle.
