VISITING HOURS
For the comfort of our patients, visits by infants and toddlers
are discouraged except in designated areas. Young children must
be accompanied and supervised by an adult at all times.
Important changes to our visitor guidelines:
In response to continued and rising cases of H1N1 flu as well as seasonal flu, Underwood-Memorial Hospital is changing its visitation guidelines, effective immediately, to restrict people under eighteen from visiting the hospital unless they have a medical issue.
Additionally, Underwood-Memorial is advising visitors with colds or those with symptoms of upper respiratory illness to refrain from visiting patients.
Rich Bellamente, spokesman for the hospital, referred to the new guidelines as, "a very appropriate and sensible measure to further protect our patients and staff" and said the hospital instituted the age restriction because is appears that children and adolescents under eighteen seem to be affected more by the H1N1 flu virus.
Underwood anticipates the policy will remain in effect during the height of flu season, possibly through February and will be re-evaluated after that time.
“We trust the community will understand our reason for making this change and will guide themselves accordingly.” However”, according to Bellamente, “if visitation of those under eighteen is requested and determined necessary given the patient’s condition or other extenuating circumstances, Underwood will strive to accommodate families on a case-by-case basis.”
Like many other hospitals throughout the country who have or who are planning to implement similar policies, Underwood-Memorial is extremely concerned about the importance of limiting the risks of exposure to its patients as well as to its staff.
