Emergency medicine

It’s a new era of Emergency Medicine at Underwood Memorial Hospital. We’re proud to announce the completion of a major multiyear initiative to completely renovate and enhance our Emergency Department. Our new expansive, state-of-the-art facility features:

  • Accelerated treatment for heart attack patients: the only hospital in Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland counties performing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) — a minimally invasive technique to clear a blocked artery and restore blood flow to the heart
  • Shorter wait times
  • Increased number of patient treatment areas, from 23 to 42
  • Dedicated 6-bed pediatric area to maintain a calm, secure atmosphere for infants and children, with 24/7 in-house pediatric support
  • Onsite CT scanner
  • Additional 23,000 square feet of space, doubling the previous size
  • New, more convenient entrances for walk-in patients and ambulances
  • Rapid intervention for stroke patients: the only community hospital in the area administering the clot-busting drug therapy that can significantly reduce the effects of a stroke and help prevent permanent disability

Seeing is believing. Take a virtual tour.

Photos and words cannot adequately convey the remarkable transformation of our Emergency Department. To witness the changes for yourself, take this virtual tour, narrated by Dr. James Bonner, Medical Director, Department of Emergency Medicine, and discover why Underwood should be your first choice for emergency care.

Accelerated treatment for heart attack patients.

For heart attack patients, our Emergency Department is southern New Jersey’s premier destination for cardiac intervention.

Underwood Memorial Hospital is the only hospital in Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland counties that provides emergency PCI. Our expert clinicians are so proficient in this technique, our average “door-to-balloon” time is well within the national guidelines established by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.

With PCI, a balloon-tipped catheter is inserted into an artery and threaded toward a trouble spot near the heart. The balloon is inflated to widen the narrowed artery and restore blood flow. In many cases, an expandable metal mesh tube, called a stent, is inserted to keep the artery open. PCI is an extremely effective way to stop a heart attack as quickly as possible, which helps save heart muscle and aids in a more speedy recovery.
