About

Volunteering

Underwood-Memorial Hospital has a long-standing tradition of successful volunteerism. The volunteer program consists of adults and teenagers (ages 14 and above) who volunteer their time during days, evenings and weekends to offer support and assistance to staff, visitors and patients. Volunteers provide assistance with courier services, fundraising, patient transport and clerical tasks, and are also involved in various customer service requests throughout the hospital.

The 40,336 hours contributed by our volunteers during 2011 provided Underwood with $861,582 in support (based on the independent sector’s estimate of $21.36 per volunteer hour).

Volunteers are needed in the morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend shifts. Most of our volunteers work one or two four-hour shifts each week, and scheduling is convenient and flexible. While duties and responsibilities vary, every volunteer assignment is an important and keenly appreciated service. Some of the departments and programs in which you might assist patients and staff members include:

  • Auxiliary
  • Clerical work in various departments
  • Courier
  • Emergency Department
  • Guest Services Desk
  • Patient Care Areas
  • Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
  • Radiology
  • Surgical Waiting Room

You may download a volunteer application from this website or contact our Volunteer Services Department at (856) 853-2034 for further information.

As patient safety is our primary focus, all volunteer applicants are processed similarly to employees. This process includes an application, references, physician clearance, interview, background check, a half-day orientation, and training.
